How the Craftsman Found His Calling
Stillwater, MN native, Jim Clarey moved to Fargo three years after graduating with honors from Concordia College, Moorhead. He has a bachelor degree in Religious Studies and minors in Psychology and Philosophy. He is married to Bismarck native, Laura Vander Vorst and together they have one son Josiah.
Jim’s passion for woodworking began in 2003 when he ignorantly told his wife he could build a scrapbooking table at much less cost than those she was looking at in a Pottery Barn catalog. He bought a few tools on a limited budget and started making sawdust with no previous woodworking knowledge. After 2 months of work and too many mistakes to count, he had a beautiful scrapbooking table for his wife. In these two months he learned a couple very important lessons:
- Fine woodworking was not so easy. It takes quality tools, skill, patience and a great deal of attention to detail.
- He had a passion for woodworking.
As Jim made more furniture for family and friends, he started to consider a career in woodworking. At this same time, Jim and his wife were contemplating moving up to Fargo so they could live closer to her family. His wife was quickly hired as a 3rd grade teacher at Westside Elementary in Fargo, and Jim found himself learning the hardwood flooring trade at local hardwood flooring company.
Other than his background in woodworking, Jim had no prior knowledge of the hardwood flooring trade, but in three months found himself running jobsites. As was his character, he treated this job as not just a paycheck, but a craft to master. With this mentality, he quickly became very skilled in refinishing and installing hardwood floors. He especially enjoyed challenging projects such as curved stairs, inlays and custom transitions.
In January of 2010, Jim Clarey founded Natural Accent Hardwood Floors and has dedicated his time to differentiating his company through not only the quality of his work, but also through the emphasis on giving the absolute best customer service in the industry. You will find that Jim always puts his clients’ needs first in everything; from the in-home consultation, to the the comprehensive & itemized estimates, even the meticulous and daily jobsite cleanup.
Although starting a new company in a recession was a difficult task, his company quickly gained recognition. He found himself receiving referrals from as far away as Northwestern North Dakota and the Minneapolis/ St. Paul Area. Although the hardwood service industry is very competitive in the Fargo area, those who gave Jim the opportunity to provide an in-home consultation quickly realized Natural Accents Hardwood Floors was different than most skilled trade companies in existence.
Jim enjoys spending most of his free time with his wife and son, although, in the summer you may see him playing a round at the Fargo public golf courses or fishing in a local tournament. Jim is an avid fantasy reader but also enjoys historical non-fiction, especially works by David McCullough.
